How to Install a Slotted Nut

While many fasteners can be used for a variety of purposes, there are certain types that are best used in specific applications. One of these is a Slotted Nut. This type of nut has holes in the top where a pin can be inserted to lock it into place, which is useful for high vibration and motion applications like automotive components. Also known as castle nuts, slotted hex nuts or castellated hex nuts, these fasteners are designed to be used with a locking pin such as a split cotter pin, R pin, coiled pin or safety wire. These locking pins can be inserted through the slots in the nut and then into a hole in the bolt or stud to prevent loosening of the nut.
A Slotted nut is not as easy to install as a regular hex nut, and it is important to take the time to properly install the fastener so that it does not come loose. The best way to do this is to use a tool that can be adjusted to the precise height required.  These nut tools are especially useful for those who need to install Slotted nuts on an ongoing basis, such as contractors or home builders.
Using the nut tool with a set of nut files will give you the best results. Once you have set the nut to the correct height, the next step is to test it out with a string and check for any buzzing or unevenness. If there is a problem, the nut can be filed down further to fix it. The final stage is to use a file or sandpaper to smooth the surface of the nut and remove any burrs. Afterwards, you can put a dab of wood glue (some prefer super glue) on the end of the nut and use it as a clamp until it dries.
Slotted hex nuts are a great choice for many applications, and they are available in a wide variety of sizes, materials and threads. To find out more about the different options available for your application, contact a Fastener Specialist today.
